Alaskan Malamute is a difficult dog. But communicating with her is a unique opportunity to know yourself as a person!

Alaskan Malamutes Nursery Dubok

Why is Alaskan Malamute?

The choice of this breed was not accidental for us, since it is Alaskan Malamutes that are distinguished by their endurance, excellent driving characteristics and good-natured disposition.

Cyril, having a sports past, picked up a companion for training and traveling together. We understood that additional pulling force would always come in handy on our farm. Malamutov, after all, “do not feed bread”, but give a load, and more. They like to carry something behind them: sleds loaded with firewood or water, a cyclist, sledges. Their work is such, more precisely, the nature and history of the breed inherent purpose.

The nature of Alaskan Malamute

Alaskan Malamute, in our opinion, is one of the most independent breeds. Of course, there are different individuals among them, but in general it can be said that they are poorly oriented to humans, as they themselves are endowed with a strong character. Orienting them to ourselves, establishing harmonious contact is more our task as owners and breeders.

Breeder's Observations: As soon as adult Malamutes lose control (leash, timely attention switch by voice), they immediately become completely independent hunters. Track down, catch up and "eat" - their tactics of behavior on the loose. They are characterized by self-will, therefore, only through trust and respect can you build harmonious relationships with these beautiful animals.

Malamutes are attentive and quite brave in nature. But Malamute will not bark or attack a person, unless provoked.

Breeder's recommendation: Malamutes can show aggression - food and to relatives of their gender. This is solved very simply - the correct ritual by feeding all family members, and to the relatives timely (from 2.5 to 8 months) socialization, calm and confidence of the owner.

Malamutes are moderately and controlled emotionally; they can very rarely get bored, if only during the “hunt” period. On a free walk, they can easily "go into the fields", into the forests, anywhere and for a long time.

Malamute is a "flocking" animal. He perceives the whole family as his pack. And as in the team pulling sledges in the boundless snow, and in any other system in which the dog is included, hierarchy is very important. For Malamutes, this is especially true, since the need for their dominance is "in the blood." Therefore, from a small puppy's age, it makes sense to notice and not support the dog’s attempts to dominate.

Breeder's recommendation: Any dog should be raised, but especially with malamute. If you have enough attention, knowledge, patience and fortitude to build relationships with a puppy from the age of three months to six months, then you will get a really chic companion for an active life path.

We do not have much experience observing the interaction of adult dogs with young children. I was only lucky to see how in the family where the male we grow up, whom we chose to breed our bitch Askania, the baby easily copes with an adult, the kindest male dog at 4.5 years old. Including this characteristic (balanced temper, respect for children) and motivated us to choose this particular dog for mating.

Breeder's observations: We saw different dogs of this breed and we can conclude that, of course, positioning malamute as an absolutely safe dog for children is not the whole truth. The truth is that the temperament of these dogs is highly dependent on origin and upbringing..

With competent and timely education, you can make your dog contact and absolutely safe for children. For example, now, when puppies are growing in the kennel, we especially invite guests with children so that the puppies contact them and understand that “small stature are also people”.

A distinctive feature of the breed is the fact that dogs do not bark. They may rumble, grumble, or even seem to talk or sing, but you won’t hear the usual dog barking from them. We can say that they are silent. Although, if, for example, our male Umka is “eager for battle”, in the sense he is already dressed in a harness and longs for movement, then he emits a dog cry that cannot be compared with anything, except with a howl, swift and short.

We, as breeders, have two months of active photo and video shooting of puppies from 0 to 3 months. And I must say, this is something special: the process of the photo shoot itself and the further examination of the photo bring great aesthetic pleasure.

At a very young age, the cute muzzles of the Malamutes resemble woolen hippos, then - chubby teddy bears, and only after a month you begin to see that you are still raising dogs. :-) Adult dogs, of course, look great in movement. Gorgeous photos of Malamutes are obtained in the snow, on the run, in dynamics.

Nurturing and training Alaskan Malamute

First of all, Alaskan Malamute is a large, hardy northern sled dog (for slow and medium pace of moving heavy loads over long distances). However, in modern reality, as you learn, you will receive. We alternate different loads and walks depending on weather conditions and moods. In winter, this is definitely a sled, sled or ski. At other times of the year, you can just run with malamute.

For example, we don’t take part in canyros competitions (canirossross is a discipline of sledding when a dog runs in front of the owner and is connected with it by a pull). But for us and our dogs this is great physical education. We especially love cycling with dogs (in riding sports this is called bikejoring). We also periodically walk with weights. You can all be able to and alternate.

Breeder's recommendation: If you are sensitive to the mood of the dog, you can always understand what malamute is ready with great pleasure at the moment. But the principle is simple - physical activity should always be! Then everyone is happy: both the dogs and us and them.

At some point, it became important for us to learn to “speak” with our Malamutes in a language they understand. We saw that in this way you can raise a fully controlled dog, even of such a breed. Applying body language and gestures, adjusting the tactics of interaction, we began to work only on positive reinforcement. Studying ethology, we grind those flaws in education that were previously allowed out of ignorance.

Now we have malamute puppies, 3 months old. In individual lessons, they are so attentive, contact and absorb everything new like a sponge, that you are simply amazed. At this age they are fully human oriented. Now it is fantastically pleasant material for education. It seems that take the puppy and sculpts from it like from clay or clay a dog "for yourself", the one that you need, not forgetting, of course, about its natural purpose.

Breeder's recommendation: Alaskan Malamute is easy to motivate, but classes should not last long: Malamute loves variety. All disciplines of riding sports and moving weights are ideal for this breed..

They are also good companions and helpers on hikes, among them are lovers of tricks.

Of course, malamutes are not service dogs. But with their magnificent appearance they create a sense of security and reverence. For example, neither strangers nor neighbors come to the site, although the dogs are kept in the aviary.

Malamutes love active games, parties. But for this they need to prepare, educate and engage in training.

Breeder's recommendation: In order to get a “comfortable dog” from Malamute, the priorities are: physical activity in the first place, then discipline (boundaries of what you can and cannot do) and only then love for your Malamute.

Care for Alaskan Malamute

Wool Alaskan Malamute - one of the reasons to keep a dog outside the house. From our experience and sensations, this is best suited to Malamute. In the suburbs, in the estate, in the fresh air, these immigrants from Alaska - expanse, there is something to exert their strength and capabilities. But we are familiar with other examples of content that are comfortable for both owners and pets.

From the experience of the breeder: For humans, the unique wool of malamute can become a source of heat. After all, the owner in any case comb out the dog, thereby obtaining excellent raw materials for felting or making yarn. Well, it’s no secret to anyone that products made of dog wool have unique healing properties, for which they are appreciated. We have several bags of wool handed out, several more are waiting for their transformation into threads, and then into socks and belts.

Malamute - he is for that and Malamute, for that and Alaskan, in order to endure any conditions, patiently and calmly. Well, the Malamutes naturally adore winter, this is their “historically natural environment”. Frosts endure easily. We live in an aviary, but they do not spend much time in booths. Only in windy and rainy weather take refuge there. In addition, they have gorgeous wool and densely packed undercoat, so they easily winter in severe frost under the open sky. This is an amazing sight in the morning after a snowfall, when a snow hill in the aviary begins to move, and a dog appears from it, brushing it off.

Summer is not their time. In the summer, we have to get up very early in order to have a ride in the chill. Or train closer to night. Or do not load them on hot days at all.

In the heat, Malamutes love to dig holes to make a rookery, cooling in this way. Our friends even have a special bulk hill on the site so that their Malamutes can survive high temperatures in it.

Malamutes are “purebloods” in the sense of a toilet. We have adult dogs and puppies living in an aviary. Adult malamutes practically do not go to the toilet in the aviary. They are waiting for walking, waiting for training, so that out of the house (aviary) to fulfill their need. Puppies “divided” the enclosure into zones: in one part they eat and play, and the other part is a restroom. We also noticed that when we follow the regime, then small malamutics, having run out of the enclosure, immediately sit down and together empty the bladders.

Breeder's observations: They can afford pranks: measure the depth of puddles or find out what a bunch of manure consists of. But it all depends on the situation. After all, in training, on the run you don’t pump out much (and we train a lot and regularly, and free-riding is rather rare).

Our male Umka and the female of Askania have a completely different attitude to cleanliness: Umka runs around all the puddles, and Askania loves to sweep through the puddles, and give her a little deeper. However, they also have amazing coat. For 15–20 minutes everything dries up and falls off, all clean and tidy, as if nothing had happened.

Alaskan Malamute Health

An important point is the dosing of the load on the musculoskeletal system during the period of growth and formation of malamute. The regularity of physical activity and a gradual increase in exercise are also important.

But, in principle, it seems that the breed has no weaknesses. The Malamutes, it seems, are also training in us, people, strength of mind, will and discipline.

We are sometimes called and asked a malamute puppy with blue eyes. It is clear here that we are dealing with fashion and enthusiasm for blue-eyed huskies. And in Malamutes, blue eyes are a disqualifying sign.

Feeding Alaskan Malamute

One of the common questions we hear on the street is: “How much does he eat?” Apparently, many are impressed by the size of our male Umka. Well, what can I say: "Eats much less than it seems."

Also, many in the current financial situation are interested in how much it costs to maintain such a chic dog.

We specifically made the calculations and it turned out that with a reasonable approach to eating adult malamute per month, it takes from 100 to 200 rubles (the breakdown is this, because everyone has different tastes and possibilities). Raising a puppy is, of course, more expensive.

What kind of host is Alaskan Malamute needed?

If you lead an active lifestyle or decide to change the sofa to a bicycle or a treadmill, then Alaskan Malamute is definitely your companion, your daily motivator for moving forward in every sense.

Ideally, we wish our puppies malamute owners who have their own home. But the main thing to remember first of all is riding breed. Malamute needs motor activity.

If you prefer comfort over dynamic, this is definitely not your dog.

But if in your heart the deepest DAAAAA has ripened !!! Yes - to life, Yes - to joy, Yes - to motive and activity, Yes - to change, Yes - to new experience! Yes - the beating of life in all its possible manifestations! - then we have for you someone plush and just wonderful!
